NC Bookstores is a group of 12 independent bookstores located in the Piedmont area of our state. For a full list of our members, please scroll to the bottom of the page.
We're dedicated to promoting reading, writing, books, and community across North Carolina. In the age of corporate retailers, NC Bookstores is part of a larger effort to recognize and celebrate independent bookstores nationwide. We believe bookstores are not just shops but places of community, for all to gather and learn.
Here's a letter from NC author, Jill McCorkle, on our local culture of independent bookstores.
We celebrate Independent Bookstore Day, a nation-wide party where Independent bookstores invite their communities to stop by for deals, readings, food, special events, and limited-edition goodies. While Independent Bookstore Day is always the last Saturday of April, festivities will run throughout the month and culminate on April 27th, 2019. Check in with your local store to see what they're up to!
Join Our April
For the true book fans out there, we offer a challenge: from now until Saturday, April 27, 2019 (Independent Bookstore Day), pick up a Calendar from your participating store and visit each of the twelve locations to collect their unique stamps—i.e. one for each store. It’s a fun way for book lovers to explore North Carolina’s literary communities and win great prizes!
For those who complete the challenge, there's a 20% discount card that's redeemable at all twelve stores.
AND, when all twelve stamps have been collected, you will also be entered into a drawing for two people to attend the 2020 NC Literary Hall of Fame author induction ceremony in Southern Pines, which includes a night for two in Southern Pines and VIP passes for some special “behind-the-scenes” activities.
Please note that both the discount card and the Southern Pines trip are nontransferable. Discount cards are valid through December 31, 2019.

When you shop at an independently owned business, your entire community benefits:
Spend $100 at a local store and $68 of that stays in your community. Spend the same amount in a national chain and your community only sees $43
Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbors
More of your taxes are invested in your community—where they belong
Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint
Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community
Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them and they will support you
More independents mean more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community
Thank you for enjoying and supporting independent bookstores!
